What Art Supplies to Pack When Traveling: My Go-To Creative Essentials

Traveling is one of the best ways to refresh your creativity – new sights, new experiences, and a break from your usual routine. But if you’re like me, you can’t imagine going on a trip without bringing at least a few art supplies. Whether it’s a weekend getaway or a long vacation, having the right tools on hand can turn your journey into an inspiring sketchbook full of memories.

So, what art supplies should you pack when traveling? Here are my tried-and-true essentials — plus a few tips to keep things light, simple, and ready for spontaneous creativity.

1. Art Journal (My Favorite Travel Must-Have!)

This is the first thing I pack. My art journal is my creative safe space. I use it to sketch, doodle, jot down ideas, and even splash a bit of watercolor when the mood strikes. I make sure it has heavier paper, usually around 200gsm or more, so if I do decide to paint, it won’t bleed through or warp too much.

Tip: Look for journals labeled “mixed media” or “watercolor” for extra versatility.

2. Pencils & Erasers

You don’t need a full range – just a few trusty pencils (HB or 2B) and a good eraser will do the job.

Mechanical pencils are also great for travel because you don’t need a sharpener.

3. Fineliners or Ink Pens

These are great for outlining, journaling, or detailed sketching. I usually bring one or two waterproof pens so l can add watercolor on top without the ink smudging.

Travel Watercolor Set

A compact watercolor set with a few pans of your favorite colors is perfect for painting on the go. Most travel sets come with a built-in mixing palette and a brush — no need for cups or cleanup!

5. A Small Set of Colored Pencils or Markers

If I want a bit more color but don’t want to bring paint, I pack colored pencils or a small set of brush markers. They’re easy to use anywhere, even on a plane or in a café.

6. Washi Tape & Glue Stick

Perfect for adding little paper scraps, ticket stubs, or other ephemera to your journal pages. Washi tape is decorative, light, and easy to reposition.

7. Compact Supply Pouch

Keep all your tools in a small zippered pouch so they’re easy to access and don’t get lost in your bag. I love using one with lots of compartments to stay organized.

8. Optional: Mini Ruler, Scissors, or Stamps

If you’re the kind of person who likes structured layouts or fun journaling pages, a mini ruler or a pair of foldable scissors can come in handy. Stamps or stencils are great too – just don’t overpack.

Final Thoughts

Art doesn’t stop when you travel – in fact, it often becomes even more meaningful. With just a few carefully chosen supplies, you can capture memories, emotions, and scenes from your trip in a way that photos never quite can.

For me, packing my art journal is like bringing a little piece of home with me — a space to process, reflect, and play. Just remember: keep it simple, bring what inspires you, and leave space for the unexpected. You never know what you’ll create when you’re out exploring the world.
