My Favorite Places to Create

When people ask me where my favorite place to create is, they’re often expecting something like a quiet studio with perfect lighting and a door that shuts tight. But honestly? My favorite place to create is right in the middle of it all — my living room.

It’s not fancy. It’s not particularly organized. But it’s alive.

All my animals are there, either lounging around or occasionally getting into things they probably shouldn’t. My kids come and go, chatting, laughing, asking questions, or just passing through. There’s the sound of footsteps, the buzz of conversation, maybe a cartoon in the background or a dog snoring nearby.

And I love it.

There’s something about the movement, the noise, the realness of it all that actually fuels my creativity. I like being surrounded by life while I work. It reminds me why I make art in the first place — to capture those everyday moments that feel special in their own quiet way.

Creating in my living room means l’m never really alone in the process. My cat might walk across my sketch, my dog might nudge my elbow, or one of the kids might point to something I’m working on and say, “That’s cool.” These little interactions become part of the piece, woven into the energy of the work in ways you can’t always see, but I definitely feel.

It’s not a space that’s always tidy or predictable, but that’s kind of the beauty of it. It’s lived-in, full of love, and constantly changing – just like the art I make.

So while a quiet studio might sound nice now and then, give me the heart of the home any day. My living room, full of noise and life, is exactly where I want to be.
